Two cheers for the boat owner. But he's clearly a moron for seeing the line cut and blood smears and still going up to look into the boat unless he had a gun -- which I would be shocked to hear of in the PDR of Boston Metro. (I will gladly upgrade him to five cheers if in fact he did go out with a weapon -- that's what everyone competent with a gun should have been doing all day.)

Given the manhunt and the fact he must have known he was just blocks outside the cordon, the odds were extremely high that the terrorist loon was associated with that set of facts.

The only other rational hypothesis was that it was a bleeding animal ... but which aren't known for their prowess cutting ropes with knives ... but which if true would definitely call for a gun in hand!

In fact, we could say that indeed he did find a bleeding animal, couldn't we?

“Since 1964” — that would include the bombing of my house, it would include the anti-personnel devices intended for Fort Dix and it would include the dead policeman on the side of the Thruway in 1981.

Maybe, if he is caught, Monday’s bomber can explain that, like Boudin, he was merely working within the community to solve social problems.

Perhaps Monday’s bomber will be caught, perhaps not. Perhaps, some day, Monday’s bomber will be offered tenure at Columbia University.

That's hard to do in a democratic republic, especially one that is closely divided between right and left, as evidenced by the swings in election results between 2004 and 2006, 2008 and 2010 and 2010 and 2012--not to mention that 2012 re-elected both a Democratic president and a Republican House.

In an effort to overcome this close division, the left has resorted to a kind of thuggish majoritarian rhetoric in which a putative minority is demonized in the hope of uniting the majority against it. The most well-known example is the Occupy Wall Street effort, which made a scapegoat of "the 1%" in the hope of unifying 99% of the population against it. Another example is "white males," a minority by definition, whose demonization is supposed to unite women and all other ethnic groups."
