Obviously the American Left screamed that we could never intercept ICBMs out of a desire to not disadvantage their Soviet confreres. But of course people say this in real life, too, that you can't do this, that doing that is impossible, that you should just give up. What they're saying is that they're afraid you'll fail, but what they're feeling is fear that you'll succeed."
