An entitlement epidemic - George Will: "Eberstadt believes that the entitlement state poses "character challenges" because it powerfully promotes certain habits, including habits of mind. These include corruption. Since 1970, Americans have become healthier, work has become less physically stressful, the workplace has become safer — and claims from Social Security Disability Insurance have increased almost sixfold. Such claims (including fraudulent ones) are gateways to a plethora of other payments.Read More......
Daniel Patrick Moynihan, a lifelong New Deal liberal and accomplished social scientist, warned that "the issue of welfare is not what it costs those who provide it but what it costs those who receive it." As a growing portion of the population succumbs to the entitlement state's ever-expanding menu of temptations, the costs, Eberstadt concludes, include a transformation of the nation's "political culture, sensibilities, and tradition," the weakening of America's distinctive "conceptions of self-reliance, personal responsibility, and self-advancement," and perhaps a "rending of the national fabric." As a result, "America today does not look exceptional at all.""

Surprise: One of the Parisian terrorists claimed allegiance to ISIS « Hot Air: "More interestingly, however, is the fact that Amedy Coulibaly, the terrorist who killed a French policewoman and four others at a kosher grocery store last week in solidarity if not coordination with the Charlie Hebdo attackers, seems like a relative unknown to French authorities. That should not have been the case. In the last decade, Coulibaly was the subject of a magazine profile on youth unemployment. He had the opportunity to meet former French Prime Minister Nicholas Sarkozy, but only after he had already served four prison sentences for robbery and drug trafficking. Now, a video has emerged purportedly showing Coulibaly saying that he not only approved of the attack on Charlie Hebdo but pledging fealty to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria."Read More......
Why Paris is even more shocking than Peshawar - The Times of India: "The moral equivalence between the West and Islamist jihadis is presented to the reader as an unquestionable truth. There is something deeply corroded and flaccid about the Left now. It is clapped out, morally. It cannot be the custodian of Western civilization any longer.Read More......
The assault on Charlie Hebdo — terrorists killing cartoonists — can have left no rational person unscathed. As an assault on the moral senses, it had, arguably, an even greater impact than the mowing down of schoolchildren in Peshawar only days ago. In that last attack the children were pawns who had death dealt to them because of their institutional association with the Pakistani army. Their deaths were blood-curdling, but also random. They were a hapless conduit to another target: the army itself, and, by extension, the Pakistani state.
In Paris, at Charlie Hebdo's offices, the dead were chosen by name—yes, names were called out, and men who answered to them were shot; men who had been staked out and stalked, chosen expressly for slaughter for acts they had committed in the pursuit of their profession."
Are the Saudis Muslims? | Power Line: "I wrote here about the silliness of the commonly-expressed view that Islamic terrorists can’t be *real* Muslims, and shouldn’t be referred to as such, since Islam is a religion of peace. I don’t suppose anyone would deny, however, that the Saudis are real Muslims. Thus, this story from Saudi Arabia is illuminating, even though it is not about terrorism. Raif Badawi is a Saudi blogger who had a web site called the “Liberal Saudi Network.” He criticized the Saudi regime and advocated free speech. In 2012, he was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including apostasy and insulting Islam. He was lucky: the apostasy charge, which carried the death penalty, was dropped. Instead, he was sentenced to ten years in prison–the original sentence was only seven years, but it was increased on appeal–a $266,000 fine, and 1,000 lashes."Read More......
#BarackNEstPasCharlie: Why Didn’t Obama Go to Paris? | Roger L. Simon: "There had to have been a reason for his non-attendance and the bizarre dissing of this event by his administration. I believe it stems from this: There are two words our president seems constitutionally unable to put together — “Islamic” and “terrorism.” For Obama (and, as a sideshow, the zany Howard Dean), these terms are mutually exclusive, an oxymoron. Appearing in Paris, Obama might be put in the unusual position of having to link them, our complaisant press rarely having the nerve to ask such an impertinent question. Holder, in a television interview from Paris (I think it was CNN — there have been so many), danced around the question, hemming and hawing as if he couldn’t quite make out what was being said or had been asked an embarrassing question about IRS emails.Yup.
This situation had already been amplified by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls doing something completely outrageous and unjustified, indeed anathema, in the Obama worldview. He declared war on radical Islam. "

Islamophobia Is a Myth | National Review Online: "Islamophobia is a myth. Sure, some folks in Europe and elsewhere no doubt dislike Muslims, just as other losers hate the Irish or blacks or women. But the idea that there is a climate of Islamophobia, a culture of hot-headed, violent-minded hatred for Muslims that could be awoken and unleashed by the next terror attack, is an invention. Islamophobia is a code word for mainstream European elites’ fear of their own populations, of their native hordes, whom they imagine to be unenlightened, prejudiced, easily led by the tabloid media, and given to outbursts of spite and violence. The thing that keeps the Islamophobia panic alive is not actual violence against Muslims but the right-on politicos’ ill-founded yet deeply held view of ordinary Europeans, especially those of a working-class variety, as racist and stupid. This is the terrible irony of the Islamophobia panic: The fearers of anti-Muslim violence claim to be challenging prejudice but actually they reveal their own prejudices, their distrust of and disdain for those who come from the other side of the tracks, read different newspapers, hold different beliefs, live different lives. They accuse stupid white communities of viewing Muslims as an indistinguishable mob who threaten the fabric of European society, which is exactly what they think of stupid white communities."Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Endgame | Belmont Club: "You see, in the case of Charlie, talking heads will be busy for weeks debating whether the cartoonists’ provocative actions lead to righteous indignation among Muslims, which erupted furiously. When done, obfuscation will be the order of the day. As for the kosher market killings, well, if Jews were not wantonly killing Palestinians and occupying Palestinian land it would not have happened. Again, relativity will prevail – six of one is a half-dozen of another. There will be no really bad persons and Islam will remain “the religion of peace.”Read More......
But, in Nigeria, the helpless victims of Islam had done nothing to provoke violence other than simply being non-Muslim. These villagers were not in the business of printing cartoons unflattering to the prophet and they were not staunch defenders of the hated Zionists. Nope, they just were not Muslim and that was enough to bring down the wrath of god. Muslims behaved as Muslims do when no one is watching. "
Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité: 225 Years of an Unchanging Left | PJ Media: "Equally paradoxically, as the Left seeks to undermine and destroy the authority or the parents and make their children the wards of the state, à la Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, (a dystopia far more prophetic of the modern era than Orwell’s more famous 1984, in my opinion), they seek to extend the model of the family to the leviathan state, a fact which was not lost on many citizens of Warsaw Pact countries, as reflected in the following bitter joke:The new religion. Worse than the old religion. Read More......

Security Code | Belmont Club: "Speaking of cults, Dean sounds like a guy trying desperately hard not to lose his religion. Leftist orthodoxy now accepts the innocence of Islamism as an article of faith, on par with say, the enlightenment of the Buddha. It has to be true or else their little world falls apart. They are too completely invested in multiculturalism, social deconstruction and redistribution to doubt the faith now. To misgive their chosen pathway to power, is to fail at the last step. So they’ll grit their teeth and plunge on; they will never give it up on pain of anathema.
And therefore they will cling to their dogma, however improbable it might be, long past the point when any reasonable Leftist would have doubted it. This is the most dangerous aspect of the crisis facing the West. Not only are we in danger of tearing our politics apart, we must. It has now become a case of destroying our civilization in order to save it. We have to stay crazy to avoid the growing suspicion that we’re nuts. The cultural elites of the West are going to hang themselves in the morning according to a schedule that they themselves have devised.
Do you think our elites won’t punch the door buttons to let the killers in to shoot us? They already have. They already have."
A Year of Anniversaries - Thomas Sowell: "Like Woodrow Wilson, our current president is charismatic, vain, narrow and headstrong. Someone said of Woodrow Wilson that he had no friends, only devoted slaves and enemies. That description comes all too close to describing Barack Obama, with his devoted political palace guard in the White House that he listens to, in contrast to the generals he ignores on military issues and the doctors he ignores on medical issues."Thomas Sowell again -- the only man in the world still able to remember history...
